Language Declaration on First Contact

Overview

This rule moves language choice from chargen prediction to in-play discovery. It preserves scarcity while reducing early blind-guess failure.

Procedure

  1. Track uncommitted language slots.
  2. On first encounter with a new language, player declares known or unknown.
  3. If known, spend one uncommitted slot and record the language.
  4. If unknown, interaction proceeds with normal comprehension limits.

Boundaries

  • Some rare or secret languages may be excluded.
  • Once committed, a slot cannot be reassigned.
  • Referee may gate languages by ancestry, schooling, or setting logic.

Why Use It

  • Keeps discovery meaningful without chargen dead picks.
  • Supports exploratory play in mixed-culture settings.
