Language Declaration on First Contact
Overview
This rule moves language choice from chargen prediction to in-play discovery. It preserves scarcity while reducing early blind-guess failure.
Procedure
- Track uncommitted language slots.
- On first encounter with a new language, player declares known or unknown.
- If known, spend one uncommitted slot and record the language.
- If unknown, interaction proceeds with normal comprehension limits.
Boundaries
- Some rare or secret languages may be excluded.
- Once committed, a slot cannot be reassigned.
- Referee may gate languages by ancestry, schooling, or setting logic.
Why Use It
- Keeps discovery meaningful without chargen dead picks.
- Supports exploratory play in mixed-culture settings.
